City of Inverness

Inverness is a favorite of both residents and visitors along the Nature Coast of Florida. It has managed to preserve its historic old town charm while developing and enhancing its parks and natural resources. Visit the completely renovated “Olde Towne” that offers a diversity of activities that make larger cities green with envy. Unique boutiques, local festivals, outdoor musicals and a wide range of fine restaurants are only some of the things that draw visitors here. Parks and lakes, hiking trails and flea markets, there’s something for everyone in Inverness. Community events and festivals occur throughout the year, inviting strangers and long time neighbors to meet old friends and new.

Located in Citrus County, which was founded 124 years ago in 1887, Inverness history dates back 122 years to 1889, when the original settlement called "Tompkinsville" was re-named Inverness, meaning "at the mouth of the river.” Inverness, Scotland may very well have been the inspiration for this name change 122 years ago, and it has become their sister city.

Homosassa

Rich in the history of the area, Homosassa has varying habitats and natural features, with the tales of different cultures told throughout the city. First inhabited by Native Americans, archeologists have found indications that Citrus County was occupied by pre-historic aboriginal people for 12,000 years before the arrival of Spanish explorers.

The quiet little fishing village is exactly as described. Commercial fishermen have all but retired for various reasons, but it’s the old Florida cachet that brings visitors to vacation and to enjoy the recreation in the area. Close to the Gulf of Mexico, and on the picturesque Homosassa River, you can enjoy local Manatee Tours and even swim with the friendly giants. Watch the water go by on the Sunshine River Tour and after your time in the sun head to Spa and be pampered!
